Local building services firm Alliance Electrical, inspired by the hard-work and dedication of the NHS, have offered the services of their Plumbing & Heating engineers free of charge to any NHS employee requiring emergency works to their heating or boilers, during the Covid-19 crisis.

To show their appreciation any emergency boiler and heating work undertaken by Alliance for all NHS employees will be free of any labour charge for the duration of the Covid-19 crisis and any non-emergency works for NHS employees will be prioritised and offered at a discounted rate.

Managing Director, Errol Lawrie stated that the company, which continues to deliver emergency repair works for its customers across Tayside, Angus and Fife, is prepared to do what it can to support front line staff during these unprecedented times.

“The whole situation has been pretty humbling to be honest. Although we took the situation seriously, like most others, we never expected it to get this bad. Whilst some of our team are able to continue working from home, the situation has effected most of our site-based jobs. After speaking to our guys, we want to offer something back to those working in the NHS. The team and I wanted to play our part and we are glad to be in a position to offer some support.”

Any NHS employees who find themselves in need of emergency works to their boiler or heating systems should contact Alliance on their normal office number, which is available on their website.

Local tradesman Alistair Watson, of Forfar-based Alliance Electrical, has been selected by training officers at Dundee and Angus College, where he is currently studying as part of his apprenticeship, to represent the college, his employer, Alliance Electrical and the region in the North Heat of the Scottish Electrotechnical Modern Apprenticeship Competition (eMAc).

Alistair, who will compete in the third-year category, having also been selected last year, will be up against nine other electrical apprentices from across the North region, which covers the whole of Scotland from north of the Tay. The competition is organised and run by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) and aims to recognise the achievements of Scotland’s apprentices as well as demonstrate the level of skill and expertise that will be gained through an apprenticeship.

The top 6 apprentices from the North Heat will compete against their counterparts from the South in a Scottish final before winners from all across the UK will be invited to compete in the UK skills competition final that is organised by WorldSkills UK.

Dundee and Angus College-based SECTT Training Officer, David Stebbings commented;

“Events like the Electrotechnical Modern Apprenticeship Competition give our apprentices something to strive for. For any apprentice, being selected to represent your region, employer and college as one of only 20 out of 700 trainees across Scotland, is a big achievement.

“Alistair’s selection as our representative in the competition is testament to his dedication to his education and development. He did exceptionally well in the competition last year a narrowly missed out on a place in the national final so he has some unfinished business, everyone at Dundee and Angus College will be rooting for him.”

As part of his apprenticeship Alistair completes his practical experience with Forfar-based Alliance Electrical. Managing Director of Alliance, Errol Lawrie added;

“Alistair is a real asset to our team and a credit to the team at Dundee and Angus College. Alliance deliver a wide range of electrical services across Tayside and Fife which has allowed Alistair to gain valuable experience in many different types of work. Everyone at Alliance is very proud of Alistair and wish him the best in the competition.”

Speaking of his selection to compete in the competition for the second year in a row Alistair commented;

“I am delighted to be selected to compete in eMAc again, the competition helps improve my skills and the teams at Dundee and Angus College and Alliance have been very supportive. I have been working hard to get ready for the competition and look forward to the event.”

Alliance Electrical is a well-established and reputable contractor that has a long history of working with Dundee and Angus College to provide Apprenticeship opportunities for young people locally. The company, which will celebrate it’s 25th year in business in 2020, was acquired by United Capital in December 2019 and will continue to grow and offer opportunities to young people under the new ownership.

Forfar-based contracting company Alliance Electrical has saved local jobs by employing several skilled plumbers and heating engineers made redundant after long-standing Montrose firm, James Davidson and Sons Limited entered voluntary liquidation last week.

James Davidson and Sons contacted Alliance Electrical in an attempt to save some of their team from un-employment as they called in administrators. James Davidson and Sons, which was established in 1834, delivers plumbing and heating services to the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors and has customers across the East Coast of Scotland.

Alliance Electrical, part of the United Capital group of businesses, has recorded strong growth and results recently and has initially agreed to employ six fully qualified and experienced plumbers who worked at the failed firm.

Alliance Electrical Managing Director, Errol Lawrie commented; “It was a surprise to receive the call from James Davidson and Sons, a company which have operated for many years in the region. Due to the continued success and growth of Alliance we have been able to save several jobs that would have otherwise disappeared locally, leaving very skilled tradesmen unemployed.”

“We have already been approached by a number of the company’s customers, whom we have reassured will continue to be served by the engineers with the support of our wider team.”

Graeme Carling, who bought McGill earlier in the year, has completed his acquisition of Angus-based electrical, plumbing and heating firm, Alliance, which has annual turnover of over £3.5million, in what is his second company purchase of the year.

Alliance, a company which delivers multi-trades services to commercial, private and public sector customers, joins Carling’s group of businesses during a period of expansion. Graeme Carling outlined its plans for rapid growth after purchasing former Scotland Top 500 construction company, McGill, after it entered administration in February.

Carling confirmed that Alliance will retain autonomy and identity rather than becoming part of McGill and commented;

“We are excited to complete the purchase of Alliance having signalled our plan for growth through acquisition earlier this year. Alliance is a solid and well-performing company with strong management and an expert team. The business will operate as it currently does, with the support of our board of directors and team. We currently have a number of other acquisition targets, some of which are already at legal stages and subject to due diligence, should complete in the early stages of next year.”

Alliance Electricals’ Managing Director, Errol Lawrie will continue to lead the business, which delivers electrical, heating and plumbing and fire and security services across the East Coast of Scotland. Errol, who has led the business since 2007, commented;

“This is a very exciting point in the history of Alliance and this deal signifies the combined effort of our entire team to grow the business to this point. The acquisition by Graeme Carling opens up many new opportunities and I am sure under the stewardship of Graeme and his board of directors, Alliance will continue to grow.”

Alliance Electrical, which will celebrate its 25 year in business next year, operates from its headquarters in Forfar and has over 50 employees.
